Ahoi Ashtami is observed on the eighth day of the waning moon in the month of Kartik. Mothers keep this fast for the health and long life of their children.
Women fast without food through the day. After moonrise that night, an image of Ahoi Mata is drawn on the wall, with a water-filled vessel placed before it. A silver mongoose figure and two little dolls are strung on a mauli thread and worshipped with roli and rice, and offered milk-rice or halwa as naivedya. A water vessel kept ready earlier is then used to offer arghya to the moon; holding seven grains of wheat, one listens to the Ahoi Mata katha, and afterward wears the mauli-strung Ahoi around the neck. The naivedya is given to a Brahmin or to one's mother-in-law before eating. After every child is born or married, another little Ahoi figure is added to the same thread.
In a certain town lived a merchant with seven sons. One day his wife went to a clay pit to dig soil for the puja. As she dug, she unknowingly struck and killed the newborn young of a mongoose living there. The merchant's wife was deeply grieved by what she had done, but there was no undoing it — she returned home full of remorse.
When she reached home, the merchant's wife found all seven of her sons lying dead. Grief-stricken, the mother mongoose had prayed that whoever killed her young should suffer the same sorrow, and by that curse the merchant's seven sons perished within the year. Broken by this loss, the merchant and his wife set out on foot for a pilgrimage site, resolved to end their lives there. Along the way, as they collapsed from exhaustion, a compassionate god appeared, revealed the true cause of their suffering, and told them: go home, care for a cow, be kind to every living creature, and worship Ahoi Mata faithfully every year — do this, and you will know the joy of children again. The couple obeyed, and by that grace they were blessed with sons once more and lived out their days in happiness.
Another merchant had seven sons, seven daughters-in-law, and one daughter. On the eighth day of Kartik's waning moon, the seven daughters-in-law went into the forest with their sister-in-law (the merchant's daughter) to dig clay for the Ahoi puja. As they dug, the sister-in-law's hand struck and killed a young mongoose living there. Furious, the mother mongoose declared, 'Now I will bind your womb' — meaning she would never know the joy of children. Terrified, the sister-in-law begged her sisters-in-law that one of them take the curse upon her womb instead, to spare her. All refused except the youngest, who, after some thought, agreed to bear it.
After that, whatever child was born to the youngest daughter-in-law died within seven days. A pandit was called and asked why. He explained that a black cow is, by kinship, the mongoose-mother's sister, and that faithful service to her could free the bound womb. Hearing this, the young woman began rising before dawn each day to quietly serve and clean up after a black cow. One day the cow noticed someone tending her and asked why. The daughter-in-law told her the whole story and asked for help in having her curse lifted. Moved, the cow agreed to carry her along to Mother Syaahu.
On the way, worn out by the heat, they sat beneath a tree where a young garuda bird lived. A snake came to bite the chick, and the daughter-in-law killed it to save the bird. When the mother garuda returned and saw blood, she mistook the young woman for the attacker and turned on her — but on learning the truth, she was delighted, and out of gratitude carried both the cow and the daughter-in-law on her back across seven seas to Mother Syaahu. Syaahu Mata was overjoyed to see her old friend the cow again after so many years, and the daughter-in-law devotedly combed and cleaned her hair in service. Pleased, Syaahu Mata offered her a boon, and the young woman asked only that her bound womb be opened.
Syaahu Mata said, 'Your devotion has won me over — your womb must now be freed,' and blessed her: 'Go, your home will have seven sons and seven daughters-in-law!' When she returned home, she found her seven sons and seven daughters-in-law all alive and well. Overjoyed, she made seven little Ahoi figures and completed the udyapan with seven vessels of offerings. As it happened, that same day was Diwali, and her elder sisters-in-law worried she might be weeping over her lost children and spoil the festivities. Children sent to check on her came back reporting that she was happily busy kneading dough for the celebration instead. On hearing the truth, all the sisters-in-law gathered around her and joined in praising Mother Syaahu. Just as Ahoi Mata opened that daughter-in-law's womb, may she fulfill the wishes of every woman who keeps this vrat.
