Tuesday is dedicated to Hanuman Ji, and its vow is kept especially to cure ailments of health and blood, to raise one's standing, and to be blessed with children. For twenty-one Tuesdays, the observer should take only a single meal a day made of wheat and jaggery, wear red clothing, and offer red flowers to Hanuman Ji. At the end of the day, one should worship Hanuman Ji with full rites and hear the story of this vow.
In a certain village there lived a poor but devout Brahmin couple who had no children. Longing for a son, the Brahmin went to the forest every day to worship Hanuman Ji, while his wife stayed home and kept the fast every Tuesday, offering the day's food to Hanuman Ji before eating it herself. One Tuesday, for some reason, she was unable to prepare the offering, and had to keep the vow that day without one, troubled in heart. Pleased by the woman's years of unwavering devotion, Hanuman Ji appeared to her that very night in a dream, taking the form of a child himself and giving himself to her as a son, saying he would remain in her service. On waking, the woman found a radiant boy beside her, and knowing this to be Hanuman Ji's grace, she named him Mangal.
When the Brahmin returned from the forest and saw an unfamiliar boy in the house, he did not believe his wife's account and grew suspicious of her. Carrying this distrust in his heart, he one day sent the boy to fetch water from a well, going along with him. On reaching the well, he pushed the boy in, and returned home alone without telling anyone what he had done.
The wife knew nothing of what had happened, and was astonished to find that the boy Mangal had already reached home safely and was sitting there. That same night, Hanuman Ji appeared in the Brahmin's dream and told him the whole truth — that the boy was himself a boon granted by Hanuman Ji, and that his wife was entirely innocent. Hearing this, the Brahmin felt deep remorse for what he had done, and begged his wife's forgiveness. After this, the couple began keeping the Tuesday vow with devotion every year, and by Hanuman Ji's grace their household remained ever filled with happiness and prosperity. Whoever keeps the Tuesday vow with devotion, or hears this story, has all their troubles removed by Hanuman Ji's grace.
