The Krishna Chaturthi of the month of Magh is called "Sakat Chauth," the day on which Sakat Haran Ganpati is worshipped. It is believed that observing this vow with devotion removes every hardship from life and fulfills one's wishes. Women keep a waterless fast through the day and break it in the evening with fruit alone. The next morning, the puri and other food offered the previous evening to "Sakat Mata" is eaten as prasad. On this occasion, sesame seeds and jaggery are roasted and pounded together into "tilkut," part of which is shaped into a small "tilkut goat." After the worship, a child of the household symbolically "cuts the neck" of this tilkut goat, and the tilkut is then distributed to everyone as prasad. This katha is heard at the close of the puja.
In a certain town lived a potter whose kiln, no matter what he tried, simply would not bake properly. Distressed, he went to the king and told him of his trouble. The king summoned his court priest and asked the reason. The priest declared that the kiln would only bake well if a child were sacrificed into it. The king turned this into law: each time the kiln was fired, every family in the town would take its turn sending one child to be sacrificed.
Some time later, as chance would have it on the very day of Sakat Chauth, the turn fell upon an old widow whose only support in life was her one son. The king's soldiers showed no mercy for her pitiful state. Grief-stricken, she told her son to take betel nut and doob grass in his hand, to keep taking God's name, and to sit inside the kiln, and she blessed him to place his full faith in Sakat Mata.
With her son placed inside the kiln, the widow sat outside worshipping Sakat Mata and praying for his safety. Normally the kiln took several days to bake fully, but by Sakat Mata's grace it baked perfectly that very night. The next morning the potter was astonished to find every pot fully and properly baked.
And more than that — the widow's son, and every other child of the town who had earlier been given in sacrifice, were all found alive and unharmed. Seeing this, the whole town praised the glory of Sakat Mata. Whoever keeps the fast of Sakat Chauth with a sincere heart and remembers Sakat Mata has every "sakat," every hardship, removed from their life. Here the katha concludes.
