This Ekadashi, falling in the waning fortnight of the month of Magh, is called Shattila Ekadashi because of the special glory given to using sesame in six ways on this day — massaging the body with sesame oil, bathing in sesame-mixed water, drinking sesame-infused water, offering sesame in a havan, eating sesame-based preparations, and giving sesame in charity. Krishna himself taught this practice to Narad ji.
A Brahmin woman once performed such severe austerities that her body wasted away with the effort. Pleased by her tapasya, the Lord himself came to her door disguised as a beggar asking for alms. In a fit of anger, she dropped a lump of clay into his begging bowl instead of food. After her death she reached Vaikunth, where she was given a clean, magnificent home to live in — but no provision of food or drink. Seeing this, she was deeply troubled and wondered, 'After such hard austerity, why is there nothing here for me to eat?'
She asked the Lord the reason, and he told her to ask the celestial maidens. They explained that she had never observed the Shattila Ekadashi fast, and that was why no food came to her here. On hearing this, the Brahmin woman duly performed the Shattila Ekadashi vrat, and by its merit she came to enjoy every pleasure of heaven.
