On the day of Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the worship of Govardhan is prescribed. It is also known as Annakut. On that day, every temple is adorned with an Annakut display, in which countless varieties of dishes are prepared and offered before the deity's image as naivedya. To behold this splendor, vast crowds gather at the temples that day.
According to mythological tradition, the people of Braj, led by Nand Baba, used to worship Indra on that day, a rite called Indrayaga. Once, Bhagwan Shri Krishna stopped Nand Baba from performing this worship of Indra. He said that if all the people together worshipped Govardhan Nath instead, they would gain far greater benefit. Following his word, all the Brajwasis did exactly this, offering fifty-six varieties of food to Govardhan Nath. Angered by this, Indra Dev commanded his clouds to pour torrential rain and wash away the whole of Braj. The clouds rained down relentlessly over Braj for seven straight days.
Seeing this terrible sight unfold, Bhagwan Shri Krishna lifted the massive Govardhan mountain upon the little finger of his hand. Beneath this towering mountain, he kept all the cowherds safe and unharmed. Witnessing this wondrous, divine play, Indra was struck with astonishment and dread.
Indra now recognized the divinity within Shri Krishna. He begged forgiveness of him and bathed him in an abhishek of milk. The spot where that milk flowed and pooled came to be known as Surabhi Kund. In this way, since Bhagwan Shri Krishna humbled Indra's pride, the festival of Annakut has ever since been celebrated as a festival of victory.
