Friday is dedicated to Shukra Dev, and this vow is observed by wearing white clothing and worshipping Shukra Dev with rice, curd, sugar, and white sandalwood. This vow especially serves as a reminder that during the period the almanac marks Shukra as having 'set,' a married daughter should not be sent to her husband's home, nor should any new auspicious undertaking begin. After the puja, one should hear the story of this vow.
In a certain city there lived three childhood friends — a Kayastha, a Brahmin, and a Vaishya — all three married since childhood. In time, the Kayastha and Brahmin friends had each completed their wife's gauna (the ceremony of formally bringing her to her husband's home), but the Vaishya's remained undone. Egged on by his Kayastha friend, the Vaishya's son also resolved to bring his wife home from her parents' house. At this, the Brahmin friend warned him that, according to the almanac, Shukra had set at that time, and that it was considered inauspicious to bring one's wife home during such a period. But the Vaishya's son paid no heed and set out for home with his wife.
Along the way, one calamity followed another — a wheel of the cart broke, the ox was injured, his wife fell and was hurt, and bandits robbed them of all their money, clothes, and jewelry. Somehow they reached home, but the moment they arrived, the Vaishya's son was bitten by a snake and collapsed unconscious. The physicians declared that his death within three days was certain.
Seeing this, the Brahmin friend arrived and explained that all of this was the result of violating the rule against bringing a wife home while Shukra had set, and that the only remedy was to send her back to her parents' home at once, until Shukra rose again. The father followed this advice immediately, and the effect of the snake's venom began to subside through ordinary treatment. When, according to the almanac, Shukra rose again, the in-laws formally sent the bride back with proper rites, and the couple lived happily together thereafter. In this way, whoever observes the Friday vow is spared from many such obstacles.
