Vat Savitri Vrat is observed on the Krishna Amavasya (dark-moon day) of the month of Jyeshtha, and is considered one of the foremost vows for married women, kept for their husband's long life, health, and good fortune. On this day, the banyan (vat) tree is worshipped, along with Satyavan-Savitri and Yamraj. Women bathe in the morning, fill a bamboo basket with sand and set up an image of Brahma in it with Savitri to his left, place a second basket with a joint image of Satyavan and Savitri, and set both baskets beneath the tree. Brahma and Savitri are worshipped first, then Satyavan and Savitri, with water, flowers, moli thread, roli, soaked chana, jaggery, and incense and lamp. Water is offered to the tree, a raw thread is wound around its trunk while circling it three times, and it is adorned with ornaments made from its own leaves. Holding a bayana offering in the lap, the Vat-Savitri katha is heard, after which the bayana, along with money, is given to one's mother-in-law for her blessing. Finally, clothes and fruit are donated to Brahmins. If no banyan tree is nearby, even a picture of one may be worshipped with the same devotion.
In the kingdom of Madra Desh ruled a righteous king named Ashwapati, who remained childless for many years. Along with his queen, he performed rigorous worship and a vow to Goddess Savitri, and, pleased by their devotion, she granted them the boon of a daughter. A girl endowed with every virtue was born as a result, and named Savitri after the goddess herself. When she came of age, the king allowed her to choose her own husband and sent her out with attendants to search. During her search she met the exiled prince Satyavan in the forest, living there with his blind father, the deposed King Dyumatsena, after the loss of their kingdom. Savitri chose Satyavan as her husband and returned to tell her father.
At that very time, the sage Narada was visiting King Ashwapati's court. Savitri paid her respects and told him of her choice. Seeing Satyavan's past, present, and future with his divine sight, Narada revealed that although Satyavan was excellent in every virtue, he was destined to die on that very date exactly one year later. Hearing this, King Ashwapati urged Savitri to choose another husband, but Savitri firmly replied that a devoted woman chooses her husband only once in life, and that she had already given her heart to Satyavan — whatever his lifespan, she would give it to no one else. Moved by her resolve, the king had Savitri married to Satyavan. Savitri already knew from Narada the exact date her husband would die. After the marriage, she went to live in the forest, devoting herself to the service of her husband and his parents.
As the fated year passed and the day of death drew near, Savitri kept a fast for the final three days. On the appointed day, after performing the ancestral rites, Satyavan went as usual into the forest to cut wood, and Savitri, taking leave from her parents-in-law, accompanied him. In the forest, after gathering fruit for Savitri, Satyavan climbed a tree to cut wood, when an unbearable pain struck his head. He climbed down, and Savitri laid him in her lap beneath a banyan tree. At that very moment, Savitri saw Yamraj approaching from the south with his attendants. Yamraj bound Satyavan's life-force and began to depart, and Savitri rose and followed close behind.
Yamraj told her to turn back, but Savitri replied that following one's husband is a wife's dharma, and that it would not be right to stop her, given the strength of her devotion. Pleased by her truthful words, Yamraj told her to ask for any boon except her husband's life. Savitri asked for her blind father-in-law's eyesight and long life, which Yamraj granted, saying "so be it" — yet Savitri kept walking beside him. Asked again to turn back, Savitri said life without her husband held no meaning, so she would keep following. Impressed, Yamraj offered a second boon, and Savitri asked that her father-in-law's lost kingdom be restored to him and that he be blessed with a hundred sons. Yamraj granted this too, but Savitri still did not stop. Finally Yamraj told her to name whatever wish remained directly. Savitri humbly asked to become the mother of a hundred sons herself, and Yamraj, without thinking it through, granted it, saying "so be it."
Saying this, Yamraj told Savitri to turn back, explaining that all her wishes had been granted. Savitri then humbly reminded him of the contradiction in his own boon — without her husband, how could she become the mother of a hundred sons? Struck by his own oversight, and moved by Savitri's truthfulness, devotion, and wit, Yamraj returned Satyavan's life-force and vanished. Savitri returned to the banyan tree where Satyavan's body lay, and as soon as she completed her circling of the tree, Satyavan came back to life. The joyful couple returned home, where they found that his father Dyumatsena's eyesight had been restored; soon his ministers arrived searching for him, and he regained his throne. Meanwhile, Savitri's own father was blessed with a hundred sons, and Savitri herself, by Yamraj's boon, became the mother of a hundred sons. Thus, through the strength of her devotion to her husband, Savitri secured the welfare of both families, and Satyavan and Savitri enjoyed royal happiness for many years. Here the katha concludes.
