The time after sunset and before the true onset of night is called Pradosh Kaal, and because Shiv Ji is worshipped during this very period, the vow is called Pradosh Vrat. On Trayodashi, one remains without food through the day, bathes in the evening, wears white clothes, performs the evening sandhya-vandan, and begins the worship of Shiv Ji when about three ghadis remain before sunset gives way to night.
A poor Brahmin widow lived by begging alms, together with her two sons. One day on the road she met the sage Shandilya, from whom she heard of the glory and method of Pradosh Vrat. Moved by devotion, she had both her sons take up the vow, and for a full year they worshipped Shiv Ji faithfully according to its rule.
One of the two sons — who was, in truth, a prince — one day found a golden kalash filled with wealth while bathing in a river, and brought it home. The mother suggested this wealth be shared with the Brahmin's own son, Shuchivrat, but Shuchivrat declined, saying that every person must reap the fruit of their own deeds, and so he would not claim a share of it.
A year later, in the spring, the prince and Shuchivrat wandered into a forest, where they saw Gandharva maidens at play. Fearlessly, the prince walked alone into their garden. The most beautiful of them, a maiden named Anshumati, was captivated by his Kamadev-like form and wished to speak with him alone. She sent her companions off to gather fresh Ashoka, Champak, and Maulsiri flowers, and stayed behind with the prince. A mutual attraction grew between them. The prince told her he was the son of the King of Vidarbha, dispossessed of his kingdom by enemies, and Anshumati told him she was the daughter of the Gandharva king Vidravik, and admitted she had stayed behind on purpose. She told him her music enchanted even the celestial women, and as a token of her love, placed her own precious necklace around his neck.
The prince objected — even if her feelings were genuine, how could a Gandharva princess live with a dethroned prince, and how could she leave without her father's consent? Anshumati smiled and said she would choose him of her own free will, whatever the consequence, and told him to return to that same spot two days later at dawn before rejoining her companions. Two days later, when the prince and Shuchivrat reached the forest, the Gandharva king himself was waiting there with his daughter. He explained that, during a recent visit to Kailash, Shiv Ji himself had told him of this dispossessed, devoted prince — named Dharmagupt — and had commanded him to help the prince defeat his enemies and to give him his daughter in marriage.
The Gandharva king married Anshumati to the prince there and then, gave many servants as dowry, and, most importantly, provided a full fourfold army — infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots — to help him defeat his enemies. He blessed the couple with ten thousand years together, and promised that Anshumati would remain with him in that same form even after he later ascended to Shivaloka. With the Gandharva army's help, the prince defeated his enemies, retook his capital, and was formally crowned by his ministers. He installed the Brahmin widow who had raised him as Rajmata, and Shuchivrat became like a younger brother to him. All of this came to him through the merit of worshipping Shiv Ji during Pradosh Vrat. Whoever hears this katha during Pradosh Kaal, or regularly, is freed from every trouble and at last attains the supreme state. Here the katha concludes.
The udyapan of Pradosh Vrat begins with a morning bath, after which an image of Shiv-Parvati is installed in a decorated mandap and worshipped with full ritual. A havan is then performed, offering kheer into the fire while reciting "Om Uma sahit Shivaya Namah" for one hundred and eight oblations, along with further oblations of "Om Namah Shivaya." A donation is then given to a Brahmin, and, with his blessing, the family eats together while remembering Shiv Ji. According to the Skanda Purana, whoever completes this udyapan is blessed with sons, grandsons, and good health.
