The Monday vow is dedicated to Bhagwan Shiv, and three forms of it are practiced — the ordinary weekly Somvar vow, the Saumya Pradosh vow, and the Solah (Sixteen) Somvar vow — all three following the same worship procedure. On this day one should bathe in the morning and worship Shiv-Parvati with incense, a lamp, bael leaves, and flowers, eat only a single meal through the day, and, after the puja, listen with devotion to the story of this vow. By Bhagwan Shiv's grace, all the heartfelt wishes of one who observes it this way are fulfilled.
In a certain city there lived a wealthy but childless merchant, who worshipped Bhagwan Shiv with great devotion every Monday. Moved by his unwavering devotion, Mata Parvati was touched and prayed to Bhagwan Shiv to grant the merchant the happiness of a son. Bhagwan Shiv revealed that the son destined for the merchant would live only until the age of twelve. Even so, on account of the merchant's devotion, Mata Parvati asked that he be granted a son, and Bhagwan Shiv said 'tathastu' — so be it. Some time later, a radiant son was born in the merchant's household, and the whole city rejoiced.
The merchant secretly knew his son was destined to live only a short life, so instead of arranging his marriage, he decided to send him to Kashi to pursue his education, reasoning that learning and meritorious deeds might extend his years. The boy set out for Kashi with his maternal uncle, and along the way, wherever the opportunity arose, he had yajnas performed and fed Brahmins as he traveled. On the road lay a kingdom where the king was about to marry his daughter to a prince who was blind in one eye. Learning of this, the royal family felt embarrassed, and a scheme was devised to have a handsome young man stand in for the one-eyed prince at the wedding ceremony. As it happened, the merchant's son was present there, and on account of his handsome appearance, he was chosen for this role. Before the wedding rites were completed, the boy secretly wrote the truth on the hem of the bride's garment — that the real groom was blind in one eye, and he himself was only a stand-in.
When the bride read what was written on her garment, she refused to accept the one-eyed prince as her husband, and the wedding came to a halt. Meanwhile, the merchant's son reached Kashi with his uncle and immersed himself in his studies. The very day he turned exactly twelve years old, during a yajna he suddenly collapsed and breathed his last — exactly as Bhagwan Shiv had foretold. His uncle was overcome with grief, but, feeling it improper to leave the yajna unfinished, he concealed his sorrow and completed the rite according to proper procedure. As it happened, Bhagwan Shiv and Mata Parvati were passing by at that very time. Mata Parvati recognized the boy and once again pleaded with Bhagwan Shiv to restore his life. Pleased, Bhagwan Shiv brought the boy back to life and also blessed him with a long lifespan.
Restored to life, the boy completed his education in Kashi with his uncle and set out for home by the same road. On the way back, they passed once more through the kingdom where the wedding had been left unfinished. The people there recognized him as the very youth who had written the truth on the bride's garment, and gave him a grand welcome. The king, overjoyed, had his daughter properly married to this young man, and sent her off with him along with a dowry and attendants. The young man thus returned home safely, now married. The merchant and his wife, who had always lived in anxiety over their son's fate, were overjoyed to see him alive, learned, and married. From that day on, the whole family observed the Monday vow with devotion every year. Whoever keeps the Monday vow, or hears this story, has all their heartfelt wishes fulfilled by Bhagwan Shiv's grace.
