The Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the month of Margashirsha is called Mokshada Ekadashi, on which Bhagwan Damodar is worshipped with tulsi manjari and incense and lamp, following the usual rules observed for Dashami and Ekadashi. A night vigil is kept, pleasing the Lord through dance, song, and hymns of praise. It is believed that if a person's ancestors have fallen into a lower, suffering existence due to some sin, their descendants may observe this vow and dedicate its merit to the ancestors — and by this, they are surely freed from that suffering.
Long ago, in Champak Nagar, ruled a king named Vaikhanas, who cared for his subjects as though they were his own children. One night the king dreamed that his ancestors had fallen into a lower existence and were suffering in hell, weeping and telling him, "You are our son — deliver us from this ocean of hell." Troubled, the king told the Brahmins of his dream the next morning and asked what vow, penance, or means could free his ancestors at once. The Brahmins told him of the nearby ashram of Parvat Muni, a sage who knew past, present, and future, and advised him to go there. The king went, bowed fully at the sage's feet, and told him his sorrow. After a few moments in meditation, the sage told him that only by observing the vow of Mokshada Ekadashi — the Ekadashi of Margashirsha Shukla Paksha — and dedicating its merit to his ancestors could their liberation be achieved.
King Vaikhanas returned home, and when the month of Margashirsha arrived, he observed the vow of Mokshada Ekadashi in full accordance with the sage's instruction, and dedicated its merit to his father together with all his ancestors. The moment the merit was offered, flowers rained down from the sky, and the king's father, along with all the ancestors, was freed from hell and rose into the heavens. From the sky, his father blessed him, saying, "Son, may you prosper," and departed for the heavenly realm. Whoever observes the vow of Mokshada Ekadashi in this manner has all their sins destroyed and attains moksha after death. This vow is said to be like a wish-fulfilling gem for humankind, and merely hearing or reading of its glory grants the fruit of a Vajapeya yajna. Here the katha concludes.
