चैत्र मास के कृष्ण पक्ष में आने वाली एकादशी को पापमोचनी एकादशी कहा जाता है। इसका नाम ही इसके फल को दर्शाता है — इस व्रत को श्रद्धापूर्वक करने से जन्म-जन्मांतर के संचित पाप भी नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इस दिन भगवान विष्णु की विधिपूर्वक पूजा-आराधना करने का विधान है, और यह व्रत करने वाले को सभी प्रकार की समृद्धि और सुख की प्राप्ति होती है तथा अंततः मोक्ष का मार्ग खुलता है।
The Ekadashi that falls in the waning fortnight of the month of Chaitra is known as Papmochani Ekadashi — a name that itself declares its fruit, for observing this fast with true devotion is said to dissolve even sins carried across many lifetimes. The prescribed practice for this day is the devout worship of Lord Vishnu, and whoever keeps this vow gains every kind of prosperity and happiness, and in time finds the path to liberation.
प्राचीन काल में चैत्ररथ नामक एक अत्यंत सुंदर वन था, जहां देवराज इंद्र गंधर्व कन्याओं, अप्सराओं और देवताओं के साथ स्वच्छंद विहार करते थे। इसी वन में च्यवन ऋषि के पुत्र मेधावी नामक एक शिवभक्त ऋषि तपस्या में लीन रहते थे। एक बार शिव के विरोधी कामदेव ने द्वेषवश ऋषि मेधावी की तपस्या भंग करने की ठानी, और अपनी अनुचरी अप्सरा मंजुघोषा को इस काम पर भेजा। मंजुघोषा ने अपने नृत्य, गान और मोहक हाव-भाव से ऋषि का ध्यान भंग कर दिया, और ऋषि उस पर इतने मोहित हुए कि उन्हें दिन-रात का भान ही नहीं रहा।
Long ago there was an exceptionally beautiful forest named Chaitrarath, where Indra, king of the gods, wandered freely with gandharva maidens, apsaras, and other divinities. In this forest lived Medhavi, son of the sage Chyavan and a devoted follower of Shiva, absorbed in deep austerity. Kamadev, being at odds with Shiva, resolved out of spite to break Medhavi's tapasya, and sent his attendant apsara, Manjughosha, to do it. Through her dance, her song, and her alluring manner, Manjughosha shattered the sage's concentration, and he grew so captivated by her that he lost all sense of day and night.
दोनों वर्षों तक साथ रहे। एक दिन जब मंजुघोषा ने विदा मांगी, तो ऋषि ने उसे रोकना चाहा। तब मंजुघोषा ने उन्हें समय का स्मरण कराया, और गिनती करने पर ऋषि को पता चला कि पूरे सत्तावन वर्ष बीत चुके थे। अपनी इतनी लंबी तपस्या यूं गंवा देने पर क्रोधित होकर, और अपने पतन का एकमात्र कारण मंजुघोषा को मानकर, ऋषि ने उसे पिशाचिनी बन जाने का श्राप दे दिया। श्राप सुनकर भयभीत मंजुघोषा उनके चरणों में गिर पड़ी और कांपते हुए इससे मुक्ति का उपाय पूछने लगी।
The two lived together for years, until one day Manjughosha asked leave to go, and the sage tried to stop her. It was then that she reminded him of the time that had passed, and on counting it he realized fifty-seven years had slipped by. Enraged at having squandered so much of his austerity, and blaming Manjughosha alone for his fall, the sage cursed her to become a pishachini, a demoness. Terrified, she fell at his feet, trembling, and begged to know how the curse could be undone.
बहुत विनती करने पर ऋषि का हृदय पसीज गया, और उन्होंने कहा — यदि तुम विधिपूर्वक चैत्र कृष्ण पापमोचनी एकादशी का व्रत करो, तो तुम्हारा श्राप समाप्त हो जाएगा और तुम अपने मूल रूप को पुनः प्राप्त कर लोगी। मंजुघोषा को यह उपाय बताकर मेधावी ऋषि सीधे अपने पिता महर्षि च्यवन के आश्रम पहुंचे। पूरी बात सुनकर च्यवन ऋषि ने कहा — पुत्र, यह तुमने क्या अनर्थ कर दिया! किसी को श्राप देकर तुमने अपना संचित पुण्य भी क्षीण कर लिया है; अतः तुम्हें भी पापमोचनी एकादशी का व्रत करना होगा।
Moved at last by her pleading, the sage relented and told her: if you faithfully observe the Chaitra Krishna Papmochani Ekadashi fast, your curse will end and you will regain your former form. Having given her this remedy, Medhavi went straight to the ashram of his father, the great sage Chyavan, and told him everything. Hearing it, Chyavan said, 'My son, what have you done? By cursing another, you have also drained away your own accumulated merit — you too must now observe the Papmochani Ekadashi fast.'
इस प्रकार पापमोचनी एकादशी का व्रत करके मंजुघोषा को श्राप से और ऋषि मेधावी को अपने पाप से मुक्ति मिली। इस व्रत को करने से समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं, और इस कथा को पढ़ने अथवा सुनने मात्र से एक सहस्र गोदान के समान पुण्य प्राप्त होता है।
In this way, by observing the Papmochani Ekadashi fast, Manjughosha was freed from her curse and the sage Medhavi from his sin. Keeping this fast is said to destroy every sin, and even reading or hearing this story is said to carry the merit of donating a thousand cows.
