When Arjuna asked, Bhagwan Krishna said that the Ekadashi falling in the Krishna Paksha of Adhik Maas (Purushottam Maas, the extra lunar month) is called Parama Ekadashi. Its vow destroys all sins and grants happiness in this life and liberation after death; on this day Bhagwan Vishnu should be worshipped with incense, a lamp, food offerings, and flowers. So saying, Bhagwan Krishna related a story from Kampilya Nagari.
In Kampilya Nagari there lived an extremely poor but devout Brahmin named Sumedha, whose wife was virtuous and utterly devoted to her husband. Because of some sin from a past life, the couple lived in severe poverty. The wife served her husband with devotion, and would feed any guest who came, going hungry herself as a result. One day Sumedha told his wife he wished to travel abroad to earn money, since a household cannot run without wealth. His wife explained that a wife should honor her husband's wishes, but that destiny cannot be changed by effort alone — whatever is fated will come to them even without his traveling. Sumedha accepted her counsel and resolved to stay home.
Some time later, sage Kaundinya arrived at their home. The couple welcomed him with devotion, offering him a seat and food, and considered themselves blessed. After the meal, the wife told the sage that his auspicious arrival gave her confidence their poverty was about to end, and she asked him for a remedy. Kaundinya explained that the vow of Parama Ekadashi, falling in the Krishna Paksha of Adhik Maas, destroys all sin, sorrow, and poverty, and makes its observer wealthy — by the power of this very vow, Bhagwan Shiv himself made Kubera the treasurer of the gods. He explained that this is a five-night vow — remaining completely without water for five days and nights, keeping vigil at night with kirtan and bhajan, and worshipping Bhagwan Vishnu with incense, a lamp, food offerings, and flowers; one who observes it in this way attains Swarglok together with their parents and spouse.
Following the sage's instructions, the Brahmin couple duly observed this five-day waterless vow. As soon as it was completed, the Brahmin's wife saw a prince arrive at their home — inspired by Bhagwan Brahma, he gifted them a village and a well-furnished, excellent house as a means of livelihood. By the power of this vow, the couple enjoyed boundless happiness in this world, and after their lives ended, attained Swarglok. Bhagwan Krishna told Arjuna: O Arjuna, whoever observes the Parama Ekadashi vow obtains merit equal to all pilgrimages and yajnas combined. Just as the cow is foremost among four-footed creatures and Indra is foremost among the gods, Adhik Maas is foremost among months, and within it, this five-night vow is supremely meritorious.
