When Yudhishthira asked, Bhagwan Janardan said: the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhadrapad is called Aja Ekadashi (counted in the month of Shravan in the Gujarat-Maharashtra reckoning). It is a tithi that destroys all sins; whoever worships Bhagwan Hrishikesh and observes this vow has all their sins destroyed.
Long ago there lived a universal monarch named Harishchandra, renowned across the whole earth for his unwavering devotion to truth. As the fruit of some past deed, his kingdom was taken from him. He sold his wife and his son, and finally sold himself as well. Though steadfastly truthful, he was forced into bondage in the service of a Chandal, collecting shrouds from the dead at the cremation ground. Many years passed in this way, and the king, sinking in an ocean of grief, kept wondering what he should do, where he should go, and how he might be freed from this state.
Sensing his sorrow, the great sage Gautam came to him. Harishchandra bowed at the sage's feet, stood with folded hands, and related his whole sorrowful story. Gautam ji told him that the supremely meritorious Aja Ekadashi of Bhadrapad Krishna Paksha, which puts an end to all sins, was to fall exactly seven days later — a mark of his good fortune. He instructed the king to fast that day and keep a night vigil, and having said this, he vanished from sight. Harishchandra properly observed this supreme vow as the sage had instructed, and by its power he was freed from all his sorrows — his wife was restored to him, his son's life was restored, celestial kettledrums sounded in the sky, and a shower of flowers fell from the heavens. By the power of this Ekadashi, the king regained his kingdom unchallenged, and at last Harishchandra, together with his subjects and family, ascended to Swarglok. Bhagwan Janardan says: O Yudhishthira, whoever observes this vow is freed from all sins and attains Swarglok; merely hearing or reading this katha grants the fruit of an Ashwamedha yajna.
