ज्येष्ठ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी को अपरा अथवा अचला एकादशी कहा जाता है। इस दिन भगवान् त्रिविक्रम की पूजा की जाती है। इसे करने से कीर्ति, पुण्य तथा धन की वृद्धि होती है, तथा भूत-प्रेत जैसी निकृष्ट योनियों से मुक्ति मिलती है। इस दिन चन्दन, कपूर, गंगाजल सहित भगवान् विष्णु की पूजा की जानी चाहिए।
The Ekadashi of Jyeshtha's dark fortnight is called Apara, or Achala, Ekadashi. On this day, Bhagwan Trivikram is worshipped. Observing it increases fame, merit, and wealth, and frees one from being born into lowly forms such as ghosts and spirits. On this day, Bhagwan Vishnu should be worshipped with sandalwood, camphor, and water from the Ganga.
पुलकित मन से भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण को नमस्कार करने के बाद धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान् कृष्ण से प्रार्थना की — हे महाराज! अब मेरी इच्छा ज्येष्ठ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी के नाम, माहात्म्य, पूजा-विधान आदि के बारे में विस्तारपूर्वक जानने की है। सो आप कृपा करके सुनाइये। श्रीकृष्ण भगवान् कहने लगे — हे राजन्! इस एकादशी का नाम अपरा है। यह अपार धन देने वाली है। जो मनुष्य इस व्रत को करते हैं, संसार में उनको यश तथा कीर्ति की प्राप्ति होती है।
With a joyful heart, Dharmaraj Yudhishthir bowed to Bhagwan Shri Krishna and asked, 'O Maharaj, I now wish to hear in detail the name, glory, and manner of worship of the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha's dark fortnight. Please tell me, out of your grace.' Bhagwan Krishna began, 'O King, this Ekadashi is named Apara. It bestows boundless wealth. Whoever observes this vrat attains fame and renown in the world.'
अपरा एकादशी के व्रत के प्रभाव से ब्रह्महत्या, भूत-योनि, तथा पर-निन्दा आदि तक के सब पाप दूर हो जाते हैं। इस व्रत से पर-स्त्री-गमन, झूठी गवाही देना, असत्य भाषण, कल्पित शास्त्र पढ़ना या बनाना, झूठा ज्योतिषी अथवा झूठा वैद्य बनना आदि तक के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं।
Through the power of the Apara Ekadashi vrat, sins as grave as the killing of a Brahmin, being reborn as a spirit, and slandering others are all dispelled. This vrat also destroys the sins of consorting with another's wife, giving false witness, speaking falsehood, composing or reciting fabricated scriptures, and posing as a false astrologer or a false physician.
जो क्षत्रिय होकर युद्ध से भाग जाते हैं, वे नरकगामी होते हैं, परन्तु अपरा एकादशी का व्रत करने से उन्हें भी स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होती है। जो शिष्य गुरु से शिक्षा ग्रहण करते हैं और बाद में उनकी निंदा करते हैं, वे अवश्य नरक में पड़ते हैं, परन्तु अपरा एकादशी का व्रत करने से वह भी इस पाप से मुक्त हो जाते हैं।
A kshatriya who flees from battle is destined for hell, yet by observing the Apara Ekadashi vrat, even he attains heaven. A disciple who receives teaching from a guru and later speaks ill of him surely falls into hell, yet through this vrat's observance, even he is freed from that sin.
जो फल तीनों पुष्कर में कार्तिक पूर्णिमा को स्नान करने से, अथवा गंगा तट पर पितरों को पिंडदान करने से प्राप्त होता है, वही अपरा एकादशी का व्रत करने से प्राप्त होता है। मकर के सूर्य में प्रयागराज में स्नान से, शिवरात्रि व्रत से, सिंह राशि के बृहस्पति में गोमती नदी के स्नान से, कुम्भ में केदारनाथ अथवा बद्रिकाश्रम की यात्रा से, सूर्यग्रहण में कुरुक्षेत्र के स्नान से, स्वर्ण अथवा हाथी-घोड़ा दान करने से अथवा नव-प्रसूता गौ दान करने से जो फल मिलता है, वही फल अपरा एकादशी के व्रत से मिलता है।
The merit gained from bathing at the three Pushkars on Kartik Purnima, or from offering pind-daan to one's ancestors on the banks of the Ganga, is equally gained by observing the Apara Ekadashi vrat. The merit of bathing at Prayagraj when the sun is in Makar, of the Shivratri vow, of bathing in the Gomti when Brihaspati is in Simha, of pilgrimage to Kedarnath or Badrikashram during the Kumbh, of bathing at Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse, and of donating gold, or a horse or elephant, or a newly-calved cow — all of this merit is likewise gained through the Apara Ekadashi vrat.
यह व्रत पापरूपी वृक्ष को काटने के लिए कुल्हाड़ी है। पापरूपी ईंधन को जलाने के लिए अग्नि, तथा पापरूपी अंधेरे के लिए सूर्य के समान है। अपरा एकादशी का व्रत तथा भगवान् का पूजन करने से मनुष्य सब पापों से छूटकर विष्णुलोक को जाता है। हे राजन्! यह अपरा एकादशी की कथा मैंने लोकहित के लिए कही है; इसके पढ़ने अथवा सुनने से मनुष्य सब पापों से छूट जाता है, इसमें संदेह नहीं है।
This vrat is like an axe to fell the tree of sin — like fire to burn away the fuel of sin, and like the sun to dispel the darkness of sin. By observing the Apara Ekadashi vrat and worshipping Bhagwan, a person is freed from every sin and journeys to Vishnulok. O King, I have told the story of Apara Ekadashi for the welfare of all; there is no doubt that reading or hearing it frees a person from every sin.
