When Yudhishthira asked, Bhagwan Krishna said that the Ekadashi falling in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Ashwin is called Indira Ekadashi. Observing its vow destroys even great sins, and if a person's ancestors have fallen into a lower existence due to some fault, this vow's power grants them a good afterlife as well.
In the Satyuga, a righteous king named Indrasena ruled the city of Mahishmatipuri; he was a devoted follower of Bhagwan Vishnu and constantly remembered Govinda's name. One day the sage Narada descended from the sky into his royal court. The king rose, greeted him with folded hands, worshipped him properly, offered him a seat of honor, and asked the reason for his visit. Narada said he had just come from Yamaloka, the abode of Yama, where Yama himself had worshipped him with respect. There he had also seen the king's departed father — not in heaven, but in Yamaloka, because in some birth he had left an Ekadashi vow incomplete. Through Narada, the king's father sent word that if his son would perform the Indira Ekadashi vow on his behalf and offer its merit to him, he could be freed from Yamaloka and attain heaven. The king asked Narada to teach him the correct procedure for this vow — the fortnight, the date, and the rules to follow.
Narada explained the procedure: on Dashami, one should bathe in the early morning and again at midday, eat only one meal with devotion, and sleep on the ground that night. On Ekadashi, one should rise in the last watch of the night, clean the teeth, and take up the fast without food, remembering Bhagwan Narayan with a formal vow. At midday, for the satisfaction of the ancestors, one should properly perform their shraddha rite before a Shaligram shila, honor Brahmins with dakshina and feed them, and let a cow smell the rice-ball offered to the ancestors before feeding it to her. In the evening, one should worship Bhagwan Hrishikesh with incense and fragrance and keep a night vigil. On the morning of Dwadashi, one should worship Shri Hari again, feed Brahmins, and only then eat in silence together with brothers, grandchildren, and sons. Performing this entire vow without laziness grants the ancestors passage to Bhagwan Vishnu's Vaikuntha realm.
King Indrasena, following Narada's instructions exactly, performed this vow together with his queens, sons, and the attendants of his inner palace. As soon as the vow was completed, flowers rained down from the sky, and his father, freed from that very fault, ascended to Bhagwan Vishnu's abode mounted on Garuda. King Indrasena himself continued to rule his kingdom untroubled for a long time, and in due course placed his son on the throne and departed for Swarglok. Bhagwan Krishna says: O Yudhishthira, this is the complete glory of the Indira Ekadashi vow; whoever reads or hears this story is freed from all sins.
