Once King Yudhishthir asked Lord Krishna, 'O Lord, I wish to know in full the name, glory, and manner of worship of the Ekadashi that falls in the waxing fortnight of Chaitra.' Krishna replied, 'O King, this very question was once asked by King Dilip to the great sage Vashishtha, and I shall now tell you the story Vashishtha told him.'
Long ago, King Pundarik, a lord of great splendor, ruled the city of Ratnapur, home to many apsaras, kinnaras, and gandharvas. Among them lived a gandharva couple, Lalit and Lalita, so deeply in love that they could not bear to be apart even for a moment. Once, while singing in King Pundarik's court alongside other gandharvas, Lalit's thoughts turned to his beloved wife, and his voice faltered mid-song. A serpent named Karkat, sensing the reason for Lalit's distraction, reported it to the king.
Hearing this, King Pundarik grew furious and declared, 'You dared to think of your wife while singing before me — so become a flesh-eating demon and suffer the fruit of this offense.' The instant the curse left his lips, Lalit transformed into a terrifying rakshasa — his face grew hideous, his eyes blazed like the sun and moon, fire poured from his mouth, the hair on his head stood like trees on a mountain, his arms grew immensely long, and his body stretched eight yojanas in length. In this monstrous form he wandered the forests in great suffering, and his grief-stricken wife Lalita followed him everywhere, forever wondering how she might free him from the curse.
One day, following her husband's path, Lalita arrived at the ashram of the sage Shringi on Mount Vindhyachal. The sage saw her and asked, 'O lady, who are you, and what brings you here?' Lalita answered, 'O sage, my name is Lalita. My husband has been turned into a terrible demon by King Pundarik's curse, and it grieves me deeply. Please tell me some way to save him.' The sage said, 'O gandharva maiden, the Ekadashi of Chaitra's waxing fortnight, called Kamada Ekadashi, is soon to come. Observing this fast fulfills every wish. If you keep it faithfully and offer its merit to your husband, the king's curse will be pacified and he will soon be freed from his demon form.'
When Chaitra Shukla Ekadashi arrived, Lalita observed the fast with full devotion, and on the twelfth day, before the assembled Brahmins, she offered its merit to her husband, praying, 'O Lord, may the fruit of this vow I have kept fall upon my husband, that he be freed from his demon form.' The moment the merit was offered, her husband was released from the rakshasa form and restored to his former self, adorned once more in fine garments and jewels, and he and Lalita rejoiced together. Soon after, the two boarded a celestial chariot and departed for the heavenly realm.
Sage Vashishtha continued, 'O King, faithfully observing this vrat destroys every sin and frees even one born into a demon's form. There is no vow in this world equal to it. Merely reading or hearing this story bestows merit equal to a Vajapeya sacrifice.'
