When Yudhishthira asked, Bhagwan Shri Krishna said: the Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the month of Magh is called Jaya Ekadashi. It is a supremely pure tithi that destroys all sins, granting both worldly enjoyment and liberation. It removes even so grave a sin as the killing of a Brahmin, and one who observes its vow is never born into the ghoulish pishacha realm. O King, this vow should be observed with great care — so saying, Shri Krishna related the following story to illustrate its glory.
In Swargaloka, Devraj Indra was enjoying himself with the gods and apsaras in the Nandanvan garden, and there he arranged a grand dance festival. The singing for this festival was entrusted to the gandharvas Pushpadanta, Chitrasena, and Chitrasena's son. Chitrasena's daughter, born of his wife Malini, was named Pushpavanti, and Pushpadanta's son was named Malyavan. Malyavan was deeply infatuated with Pushpavanti's beauty, and both came to sing together to please Indra. Because of their mutual attraction, their minds grew distracted, and their singing faltered, breaking rhythm again and again. Indra took this lapse as disrespect toward himself and, in great anger, cursed them both — that even while remaining husband and wife, they would be born into the pishacha realm.
Cursed thus, the two were struck with great sorrow and went to the Himalaya mountains, wandering through caves and suffering terribly in their pishacha existence. One day Malyavan asked his wife what sin they had committed to deserve this ghoulish birth, and both resolved to make every effort to avoid sin from then on. By fortunate coincidence, the day of Magh Shukla Ekadashi — that is, Jaya Ekadashi — came to them. They gave up food and water entirely, harmed no living creature — not even plucking a single fruit — and, sitting near a peepal tree, kept a sleepless vigil through the whole night, observing the vow until sunrise on Dwadashi. By the power of this vow and the grace of Bhagwan Vasudev, their ghoulish nature departed; both were restored to their earlier forms and ornaments, and, boarding a celestial chariot, arrived joyfully before Indra in Swargaloka and bowed at his feet. Seeing them restored, Indra was astonished and asked by what merit their pishacha-nature had been removed. Malyavan answered that it was by the grace of Bhagwan Vasudev and by observing the vow of the Ekadashi named Jaya that they had been redeemed. Hearing this, Indra was pleased and invited them to partake of the divine nectar, saying that those devoted to the Ekadashi vow and surrendered to Bhagwan Shri Krishna are worthy of reverence even from the gods themselves.
Bhagwan Shri Krishna says: O Yudhishthira, this vow of Jaya Ekadashi should certainly be observed; by its observance, even the sin of killing a Brahmin is destroyed. Whoever keeps this vow is credited with the merit of every kind of charitable giving and every yajna. Merely hearing or reading this glory grants the fruit of an Agnishtoma yajna.
