When Yudhishthira asked, Bhagwan Shri Krishna said: I shall tell you the sin-destroying account that Brahma ji once related to Narada ji. Narada ji asked Brahma, the lotus-seated one, what the Ekadashi falling in the Krishna Paksha of Shravan is called, who its presiding deity is, and what fruit it grants (in the Gujarat-Maharashtra reckoning it is counted in Ashadh Krishna Paksha). Brahma ji answered that this Ekadashi is named Kamika, and that Bhagwan Vishnu himself, in the forms of Shridhar, Hari, Vishnu, Madhav, and Madhusudan, presides over it. Merely remembering the name of this Ekadashi grants the fruit of a Vajapeya yajna.
Brahma ji continues: the fruit of worshipping Bhagwan Hari on this day is rare to obtain even at Ganga, Kashi, Naimisharanya, or Pushkar. It grants a fruit equal to bathing in the Godavari when Brihaspati is in Leo during the Vyatipat and Vaidhriti yogas, equal to donating the earth together with all its oceans and forests, and equal to the merit of donating a newly-calved cow with its accessories. Worshipping Shridhar in the month of Shravan is as though one has completed the worship of all the gods, including the gandharvas and nagas. Devotees who fear sin should worship Hari to the full extent of their capacity; this vow is the best means of deliverance for beings drowning in the ocean of worldly sin. Whoever observes this Ekadashi's vow and keeps a night vigil is never troubled by fear of Yama's messengers and never falls into an evil state after death.
Bhagwan Vishnu is far more pleased by worship offered with tulasi leaves than with red gems, pearls, beryl, or coral. Worshipping Bhagwan Keshav with clusters of tulasi flowers destroys sins accumulated across many lifetimes. Tulasi's glory is boundless — the mere sight of it destroys sin, its touch purifies a person, bowing to it removes disease, offering it water makes even Yamraj afraid, planting it brings one nearness to Bhagwan, and offering it at his feet grants liberation.
The merit of lighting a lamp before Bhagwan Shri Krishna or Vishnu on the day and night of Ekadashi is so great that even Chitragupta cannot count it; the ancestors of one who lights such a lamp are satisfied, drinking nectar in heaven. Whoever lights a lamp of ghee or sesame oil before Bhagwan attains, after death, the heavenly realm, honored by countless lamps. Bhagwan Shri Krishna says: O Yudhishthira, thus have I told you the glory of Kamika Ekadashi. It destroys all sins, and so all people should certainly observe its vow; it grants heaven and great merit. Whoever hears this glory with faith is freed from all sins and attains the abode of Vishnu.
