This vrat is performed in the evening of a full moon, a solar transition day, or an Ekadashi. Decorate the puja area with a small canopy on banana-tree pillars, and set out a kalash, rice, incense and lamp, betel leaves, tulsi, a garland of mango leaves, panchamrit, and seasonal fruit. Prepare the prasad from wheat flour or semolina, pure ghee, and sugar. After bathing, sit facing the altar, invoke Ganesh, Gauri, Varun and the other deities, take a vow to hear the katha and keep the vrat, complete the puja, and then listen to the story that follows.
Once, at the sacred grove of Naimisharanya, eighty-eight thousand sages asked Sut ji: 'O lord, how can people of this kali-yuga who have no knowledge of the Vedas still find devotion and the fruit of their wishes? Please tell us of some simple vrat.' Sut ji replied that sage Narada had once asked Lord Narayan the very same question by the ocean of milk, and that he would now retell that conversation.
Having seen how much suffering there was on earth, Narada asked Lord Narayan for a way to ease it. The Lord answered that whoever performs the Satyanarayan vrat with faith and devotion enjoys happiness in this life and attains liberation at the end of it. It can be done on any day at all, together with one's family and kin, its rites are simple, and it fulfills every sincere wish. Narada, satisfied with this answer, returned to his own realm.
In a certain town lived a desperately poor Brahmin who wandered about begging, worn out by hunger and thirst. One day the Lord appeared before him as an old Brahmin, asked the cause of his suffering, and advised him to perform the Satyanarayan vrat. The Brahmin did so with devotion, and his poverty soon lifted. A woodcutter in the same town happened to see the vrat being performed at the Brahmin's house and asked what it meant. Once he learned the rite, he too performed it with the money from selling his firewood, and from that day his household was never short of wealth again.
In the city of Kanakpur, King Ulkamukh worshipped Lord Satyanarayan on the riverbank every day. A wealthy merchant passing by learned what the puja meant and vowed that if he were ever blessed with a child, he too would perform this vrat. In time his wife Leelavati gave birth to a daughter, Kalavati, but in his joy and his business the merchant forgot his promise. Years later, even at Kalavati's wedding the vow slipped his mind, and soon after he set out on a trading voyage with his new son-in-law.
On the way, some fleeing thieves hid their stolen goods in the merchant's boats, and soldiers arrested him and his son-in-law as the thieves. Back home, Leelavati and Kalavati fell on hard times too. One day, driven by hunger, Kalavati wandered into a Brahmin's house where the Satyanarayan katha was being recited. She came home and told her mother what she had heard, and Leelavati performed the vrat with full devotion. That very night, Lord Satyanarayan appeared to the king in a dream and told him the merchant and his son-in-law were innocent. In the morning the king freed them with honor and returned all their wealth.
Even after his release, the merchant again forgot to perform the vrat. Lord Satyanarayan, disguised as a wandering ascetic, asked him what his boats were carrying. Meaning it as a test, the merchant lied and said they held nothing but leaves and twigs. The ascetic simply said, 'Let it be exactly as you have said' — and the boats truly filled with leaves. Realizing his mistake, the merchant fell at the ascetic's feet, begged forgiveness, promised never to lie again and to always keep the vrat, and his goods were restored. Before he reached home, he sent a servant ahead with the good news.
On hearing the news, Leelavati and Kalavati happily finished their puja — but Kalavati, eager to see her husband, ran to the riverbank without first taking the prasad. Angered by this lapse, the Lord let her husband's boat sink. When Kalavati could not find him, she wept bitterly, until the merchant explained that this too was the price of an oversight. The family returned together and prayed for forgiveness with full sincerity, and by Lord Satyanarayan's grace both the sunken boat and Kalavati's husband came back safely. Once home, the merchant performed the puja properly with his entire family.
King Tungadhwaj of Kaushalpur cared well for his subjects, but he himself never accepted the Satyanarayan prasad. One day, returning from a hunt, he came upon some cowherds in the forest performing the Satyanarayan puja. They offered him prasad, but in his pride he dismissed it as beneath him and rode on. By the time he reached his city, he found his entire kingdom and wealth had crumbled to nothing.
The royal astrologer told him that this ruin was the fruit of some grave mistake, and that making amends would restore everything. As soon as he remembered his lapse, the king went to the temple, begged the Lord's forgiveness, and accepted the prasad with true devotion. By Lord Satyanarayan's grace his lost splendor returned, and in time he attained liberation. Sut ji adds that everyone who performed this vrat in a past life carried its fruit into the next: the poor Brahmin was reborn as Sudama, King Ulkamukh as King Dashrath, the merchant as Morudhwaj, and King Tungadhwaj as Manu. Whoever performs the Satyanarayan vrat and listens to this katha with faith sees every worry lifted, their home filled with prosperity, and finally attains liberation.
