The Ekadashi of Shravan's bright fortnight is called Putrada Ekadashi. On this day, Bhagwan Janardan is worshipped with devotion. Observing this vrat faithfully fulfills every wish, and those who desire the happiness of children should certainly keep it. With a joyful heart, Dharmaraj Yudhishthir bowed to Bhagwan Shri Krishna and expressed his wish to know about the Ekadashi of Shravan's bright fortnight. In reply, Bhagwan Krishna said, 'O Pandu's son Yudhishthir, this Ekadashi is named Putrada. I shall tell you an ancient story about it, merely reading or hearing which grants the fruit of a Vajapeya sacrifice. Listen to it attentively.'
At the dawn of Dwapar Yuga, a mighty king named Mahijit ruled the city of Mahishmati. His kingdom was vast, but having no son, Mahijit found no joy in it. He tried many means to obtain a son — charity, meritorious deeds, yagyas, and fire-rituals — but none bore fruit. As old age drew near, the king summoned representatives of his people and learned Brahmins and said, 'O dear ones, I have committed no sin in this life. My treasury holds no wealth gained unjustly, and I have never seized the wealth of temples, households, or Brahmins. I have never taken another's inheritance, nor levied an unjust tax upon my people. I punish wrongdoers to uphold justice, but I have never hated anyone, and have regarded all as equal. And yet, though I have ruled righteously, I have no son — this grieves me deeply. What could be the reason?'
To resolve King Mahijit's difficulty, his ministers and the representatives of his people went into the forest and, visiting one great sage after another, searched for a learned ascetic who could help. In one ashram they came upon the sage Lomesh — of immense age, a knower of dharma, a great tapasvi, his mind fixed upon the Supreme, versed in hidden truths and all the scriptures. So vast was his lifespan that a single hair fell from his body only once every cosmic cycle. All bowed before sage Lomesh and sat before him. Seeing them, the sage asked what had brought them there.
Hearing this, they replied, 'O great sage, though you already know our plight, being mightier even than Brahma in wisdom, still we shall tell you our sorrow. The righteous King Mahijit of Mahishmati cherishes his people as his own children, and yet he remains sonless. We are his subjects, and his sorrow is our sorrow too. We have full faith that your very darshan will surely remove this calamity, for the sight of great souls dispels countless troubles. Please, in your grace, tell us some means by which the king may obtain a son.'
Hearing this, sage Lomesh closed his eyes for a moment and, through his yogic vision, saw the account of the king's previous birth. He then spoke in a voice full of tenderness: 'O noble ones, in his past life your king was a poor merchant. Driven by poverty, he committed many wrongs, traveling from village to village to trade. Once, on the day of Dwadashi in the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha, at midday, having gone hungry and thirsty for two days, he went to a pond to drink water. At that same spot, a thirsty cow was drinking. The man drove the thirsty cow away and drank the water himself. It is because of that very sin that he now suffers the sorrow of being without a son — his going hungry that day made him a king in this life, but for driving the thirsty cow from the water, he must bear the grief of childlessness.'
The people said, 'O best of sages, tell us some remedy by which the king's sin may be undone.' Sage Lomesh replied, 'If he observes the vow of the pure Ekadashi in Shravan's bright fortnight, and keeps vigil through the night, he shall surely obtain a son.' Having learned this remedy from sage Lomesh, everyone returned to the city. When Shravan Shukla Ekadashi arrived, all the people, together with the king, observed the vow and night-vigil of Putrada Ekadashi as the sage had instructed. Afterward, on the day of Dwadashi, the merit of this fast was offered to the king. By the power of that merit, the queen conceived, and when her term was complete, a radiant and mighty son was born.
Finally, Bhagwan Shri Krishna said, 'O King, this Ekadashi of Shravan's bright fortnight is named Putrada Ekadashi; therefore, those who desire the joy of children should surely observe this vow. Hearing its glory frees a person from all sins, and having enjoyed the happiness of children in this world, he attains heaven in the next.'
