The Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Paush is called Saphala Ekadashi (also called Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi in the Gujarat-Maharashtra reckoning), on which Bhagwan Narayan is worshipped according to full ritual. Coconut, betel nut, citron, jamira lemon, pomegranate, fine amla, cloves, jujube, and especially mango are offered in the puja, along with incense and lamp. Offering lamps (deep-daan) is specially prescribed on this Ekadashi. A night vigil is kept together with Vaishnav devotees, and it is believed that the merit of this night-vigil cannot be gained even through years of penance.
In the city of Champavati ruled the royal sage Mahishmat, who had five sons. The eldest of them was deeply wicked — given to vice, drawn to other men's wives and courtesans, squandering his father's wealth on evil deeds, and insulting Vaishnavs and the gods. Because of this conduct, the king named him "Lumbhak," and eventually his father and brothers together banished him from the kingdom. Lumbhak went to live in a dense forest, and there took to banditry to survive, gradually looting nearly the entire city. One night, entering the city to steal, he was caught by soldiers, but released once they learned he was the prince. He returned to the forest and lived on meat and wild fruit, making his shelter beneath an ancient peepal tree that the forest-dwellers believed to be the dwelling of a great deity.
One day, through the influence of some accumulated merit, he unknowingly came to observe the Ekadashi fast. On the Dashami of Paush Krishna Paksha, he ate only wild fruit, took no grain, and, lacking proper clothing, suffered through the cold night. He could not sleep, and, nearly lifeless from cold and hunger, lay in a faint — a state that continued through the Ekadashi day itself. Regaining consciousness around midday, he staggered, weak with hunger, deeper into the forest and gathered many wild fruits. By the time he returned, the sun had set. Beneath the peepal tree he offered the fruits, praying, "May Lakshmipati Bhagwan Vishnu be pleased by these fruits." That night too he could not sleep, and so, without ever intending it, he had completed the entire vow — from the Dashami fast to the Ekadashi night vigil.
Suddenly a divine voice declared: "O prince! By the grace of Saphala Ekadashi, you shall obtain both a kingdom and a son." Lumbhak accepted this, saying, "So be it." From that very moment his form became divine, his mind turned virtuous and absorbed in devotion to Bhagwan Vishnu, and, adorned with celestial ornaments, he was granted an unchallenged kingdom. He ruled it for fifteen years, and a son named Manoj was born to him. As soon as his son came of age, Lumbhak renounced all attachment to the kingdom, handed it over to him, and departed for the abode of Bhagwan Shri Krishna, where one who arrives never again falls into sorrow. Whoever observes this excellent vow of Saphala Ekadashi enjoys happiness in this world and attains moksha after death; their birth is deemed truly successful (saphal), and merely hearing or reading this glory grants the fruit of a Rajasuya yajna. Here the katha concludes.
