वैशाख मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी को अत्यंत पुण्यदायिनी और सौभाग्यदायिनी वरुथिनी एकादशी कहा जाता है। इस दिन भक्तिभाव से भगवान् मधुसूदन की पूजा करनी चाहिए। इस व्रत को करने से भगवान् मधुसूदन प्रसन्न होते हैं, समस्त पापों का नाश होता है, तथा सुख-समृद्धि की प्राप्ति होती है।
The Ekadashi of Vaishakh's dark fortnight is called Varuthini Ekadashi, greatly meritorious and a giver of good fortune. On this day one should worship Bhagwan Madhusudan with devotion. Observing this vrat pleases Bhagwan Madhusudan, destroys all sins, and brings happiness and prosperity.
इस व्रत के दिन निम्नलिखित दस वस्तुओं का त्याग करना चाहिए — काँसे के बर्तन में भोजन करना, मांस खाना, मसूर दाल खाना, चना, कोदों, शाक, मधु, दूसरे का अन्न, दिन में दूसरी बार भोजन करना, तथा स्त्री-प्रसंग।
On the day of this vrat, ten things should be given up — eating from bronze vessels, eating meat, eating lentils, chickpeas, kodo millet, leafy vegetables, honey, another person's food, eating a second time in the day, and physical union.
व्रत वाले दिन पान खाना, दातून करना, परनिंदा करना, क्रोध करना, असत्य बोलना, तथा जुआ खेलना भी वर्जित है।
On the day of the vrat, chewing betel leaf, cleaning teeth with a twig, speaking ill of others, anger, falsehood, and gambling are also forbidden.
वरुथिनी एकादशी के व्रत से अन्न-दान तथा कन्या-दान — दोनों के योग के बराबर फल मिलता है। इस व्रत को करने से स्वर्ग-लोक की प्राप्ति होती है, तथा इसके माहात्म्य को पढ़ने या सुनने मात्र से एक हजार गोदान का फल मिलता है।
Observing the Varuthini Ekadashi vrat grants merit equal to both the donation of grain and the donation of a daughter in marriage combined. This vrat leads to the attainment of the heavenly realm, and merely reading or hearing its glory grants the fruit of one thousand cow-donations.
