When Yudhishthira asked, Bhagwan Shri Krishna said: the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Falgun is called Vijaya Ekadashi (also called Magh Krishna Ekadashi in the Gujarat-Maharashtra reckoning). To describe its glory, I shall tell you the account that Brahma ji himself once gave when Narada ji asked him about it. Brahma ji told Narada that this vow is very ancient, supremely pure, and sin-destroying, and that by observing it, kings undoubtedly attain victory.
In the Treta Yuga, Maryada Purushottam Shri Ramchandra ji, marching to invade Lanka, arrived with his army at the ocean's shore. Seeing the vast, deep sea filled with fearsome aquatic creatures, he could find no way to cross it. He asked Lakshmana, addressed as Sumitranandan, "What way is there to cross this ocean easily?" Lakshmana bowed to Ram, honoring him as the primeval being and Purushottam, and told him that half a yojan from there, on Kumari Dvip, lived a very ancient sage named Bakadalbhya; he advised Ram to go to him and ask for a solution.
Shri Ram arrived at the ashram of sage Bakadalbhya and bowed to him. Pleased, the sage asked the purpose of his visit. Ram explained that he had come with his army to invade Lanka and prayed that the sage tell him a way to cross the ocean. Bakadalbhya said, "O King! By the power of the Vijaya Ekadashi vow, you shall certainly cross the ocean with your monkey army and attain victory." The sage then described the vow's complete method: on Dashami, a kalash of gold, silver, copper, or clay should be installed, filled with water and set with leafy twigs, with a golden image of Bhagwan Narayan placed atop it. On Ekadashi, after bathing at dawn, the kalash should be worshipped again — with garland, sandalwood paste, betel nut, coconut, and the like — with mixed grains and barley placed atop it, followed by offerings of fragrant paste, incense, lamp, and varied foods. The day should be spent sitting before the kalash in devotional discourse, a night vigil kept at that same spot, and a ghee lamp lit to fulfill the unbroken vow. At sunrise on Dwadashi, the kalash should be carried near a body of water, worshipped properly there, and then donated — together with the image inside it — to a Veda-knowing Brahmin, along with other generous gifts.
Brahma ji continues to Narada: hearing this, Shri Ram performed the Vijaya Ekadashi vow exactly as the sage had instructed. By the power of this vow he attained victory — he slew Ravana in battle, conquered Lanka, and recovered Sita ji. Brahma ji says that whoever observes this vow in this manner attains victory in this world and imperishable liberation in the next. Bhagwan Shri Krishna says: O Yudhishthira, for this reason the Vijaya vow should certainly be observed; merely hearing or reading this account grants the fruit of a Vajapeya yajna.
